Fire Safety Information For Our Multi-Storey Tenants Jun 16, 2017

Following on from the tragic incident at Grenfell tower block in London earlier this week, we want to reassure our tenants and their families who live in high rise buildings in the Gorbals area.

It would be wrong to comment on the details of how the fire spread in Grenfell Tower while the incident is still ongoing, and before all the facts are known. However, we would like to take this opportunity to reassure and inform our own tenants that all of the cladding and insulation systems used in our multi-storey properties is made of non-combustible material. None of our cladding is the same as that used in Grenfell Tower and none of our insulation is plastic based.

We take fire safety and regulations at our multi-storey properties at Riverside, Caledonia Road and Silverfir Court extremely seriously, as we do with all properties under our care. Our staff members work with specialist consultants and contractors to ensure that the buildings continue to meet the high standards we all expect, including checks on the dry risers. Dry risers are vertical pipes that run the full length of the building and allow firefighters to distribute water to each level of the building. These checks are carried out every six months. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service also perform their own checks on the dry risers, and other such things as fire doors, every six months, as they do across Glasgow.

In addition, our staff members carry out daily checks on fire escape stairs, fire doors, and build up in rubbish chutes. Weekly checks for emergency lighting are also in place.

There is no reason to suspect that our current procedures are inadequate for any of our locations but we are seeking advice from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and other expert sources to ask if there are any additional measures we can put in place.

Residents of our high rise properties can expect to hear from us within the next few days with more information for their households, and details about the steps we take to prevent fire and the spread of fire in our properties.

Any of our tenants and residents who have questions or concerns are encouraged to contact our office. Call 0141 429 3900, email admin@newgorbalsha.org.uk or visit us at 187 Crown Street, Gorbals, G5 9XT.
